Hernia Surgery
Hernia surgery is a medical procedure performed to repair a hernia, which occurs when an organ or fatty tissue protrudes through a weak spot or opening in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. The surgery aims to push the displaced tissue back into its proper place and strengthen the weakened area to prevent a recurrence. Here is an overview of hernia surgery:
Types of Hernia Surgery:
Open Hernia Repair (Herniorrhaphy):
- Procedure:
- A single incision is made near the hernia site.
- The protruding tissue is pushed back into place.
- The weakened muscle or tissue is repaired and reinforced with stitches or a mesh.
- Procedure:
Laparoscopic Hernia Repair:
- Procedure:
- Several small incisions are made.
- A laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) is inserted to visualize the area.
- The hernia is repaired using small instruments and reinforced with stitches or a mesh.
- Procedure:
Robotic-Assisted Hernia Repair:
- Procedure:
- Similar to laparoscopic surgery but uses robotic arms operated by the surgeon.
- Offers enhanced precision and maneuverability.
- Procedure:
Hernias are often clearly recognizable as such. The doctor first takes a look while the patient is standing, after asking them to tense their stomach muscles and cough. Then the patient is asked to lie down. This makes it easier for the doctor to feel how big the hernia sac is and see whether it can be pushed back into the abdomen. A stethoscope can be used to listen for bowel sounds in the hernia sac.
Sometimes an ultrasound scan is done too. X-rays, CT (computed tomography) scans or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans are rarely needed.
Bharathi hospital Obesity & Diabetes Surgery Centre holds pride to have performed the largest numbers of such surgeries in Asia and the only centre experienced to perform all kinds of such operations including novel procedures like Laparoscopic Duodenojejunal bypass, Laparoscopic ileal Interposition, etc.
