Colorectal Surgery
The division of colorectal surgery is aiming to offer comprehensive surgical care to patients with benign and malignant diseases of the Colon, Rectum and Anal canal.
Emergency and Elective procedures pertaining to the Colon, Rectum, and Anus are performed by a dedicated team of Gastroenterologists specially trained and experienced in Colorectal Surgery. If one would want to name one surgery that’s made open surgery go down the gutter, its laparoscopic resections of the colon and rectum for tumours, inflammatory bowel diseases, tuberculosis, etc.
With more advanced imaging and technologies like the da Vinci Robotic surgery platform, 4K laparoscopic suite, and 3D imaging in laparoscopy, it has only become better for the patient in terms of outcomes and recovery and to the surgeon in terms of ease and comfort. Using these technology and expertise the team has successfully been able to avoid colostomy/ileostomy with sphincter preservation for hundreds of patients who otherwise might have needed a colostomy. Over the years, Bharathi hospital has been honoured as the best colorectal surgery centre in Madurai.
Out-patient clinics
The colorectal team runs the outpatient clinics on all Tuesdays and Fridays. The clinics can be attended by both appointments as well as open access to walk-in patients. Complete workup and investigations are offered to the patients based on the presentation. Patients with diagnosis of cancer are discussed in the Tumour.
Out-patient procedures
Self-illuminating Proctoscope is used for the detailed assessment of anal canal problems such as anal fistula, hemorrhoids, and anal fissures. For patients with first and second-degree hemorrhoids with bleeding, rubber band ligation of hemorrhoids is performed. Banding of hemorrhoids is a well-tolerated procedure and the patient can return home within a few hours. Rigid sigmoidoscopy is performed in the outpatient clinic for selected patients and it offers the option of performing a biopsy as well if necessary.
Anal physiology services
Patients suffering from faecal evacuation problems and incontinence are evaluated with Anal manometry. Based on the manometry findings patients are carefully selected who may benefit from Biofeedback therapy. Trans-anal Ultrasonography is a particularly useful investigation for patients with anal fistula, anal pain and faecal incontinence.
Diagnostic services
Proctoscopy and Rigid Sigmoidoscopy are performed in the outpatient clinic as above. Flexible Sigmoidoscopy is offered to patients with anorectal symptoms. An enema is given to the patient following which sigmoidoscopy is performed. For patients with chronic altered bowels and anemia Colonoscopy is offered. We are able to perform a colonoscopy on the same day for patients presenting to outpatients. They are admitted to a room for bowel preparation following which colonoscopy is performed under sedation. We have a vastly experienced Radiology team helping us with Ultrasonography and CT scan.

Therapeutic services
Patients with colonic and rectal polyps are offered colonoscopy and polypectomy as a day case procedure. For selected patients presenting with obstructed colonic cancer, a same day stenting service is provided.
Chemotherapy services
A dedicated chemotherapy ward with well-trained staff nurses looks after the patients undergoing chemotherapy. Pre-printed protocols are used with individualised treatment offered to patients. All chemotherapy administration is closely monitored by Consultant Oncologist and Consultant Surgeons.
